The December 2023 release of Kenelyze is now available for all users and includes various exciting new features, including a brand new hierarchical layout algorithm, the ability to import data directly from Google Sheets data, and support for visual templates to quickly style visualizations.
Here’s a quick overview of what’s new:
Hierarchical Layouts
Next to the force-directed and circular layouts already available, Kenelyze can now also calculate node positions based on a hierarchical layout algorithm. This is especially valuable if your data is structured as a tree, hierarchy or directed acyclic graph. The layout neatly positions nodes in hierarchical levels such as the one in the simplified example below. Before running the algorithm, it is possible to set the Layout Direction (Top-Bottom in the example), the spacing between the levels in the hierarchy and the spacing between nodes within each level.
Importing data from Google Sheets
Kenelyze has always been able to generate networks based on data in Excel or CSV files stored locally. From this release onwards, it is now also possible to import data directly from Google Sheets. All Kenelyze needs is a link to the file, which should have its access set to “Anyone with the link”. You can find the new option in the Import Data screen:
As soon as the data is downloaded from Google Sheets, Kenelyze allows you to pick the sheet/tab which contains your data (if your file contains multiple sheets). You can then continue the data import process as usual.
Visual Templates
It is now possible to save all options set in the Visualization Options panels to a template, which can be loaded into other visualizations to quickly set sizes, colors and shapes and save time. For example, if you’re creating various similar networks based on the same type of data, you can now style all visualizations immediately based on a template saved earlier. This is where you can find the new option in the interface:
